Privacy Policy
Summary
The Art of Dreaming is designed to work entirely on your device. It does not have internet access, does not contain analytics, advertising, or tracking software, and does not transmit your personal data anywhere. Everything you create in the app stays on your phone unless you choose to export and share it yourself.
Information the app uses
1. Microphone
The app accesses your microphone in real time for two features:
- During a dream session, ambient sound from your room can be blended into the dream audio mix (the "reality" effect).
- In the "Counting Sheep" breathing game, the app measures how loudly you exhale so the on-screen sheep responds to your breath.
The microphone audio is processed only in memory, on your device, in real time. It is never recorded, saved to storage, or transmitted off the device. When the feature stops, the audio is gone.
2. Sleep data from Health Connect (optional)
If you grant permission, the app reads your sleep session times from Android Health Connect to line them up with your dream-journal entries.
- Access is read-only ("Sleep" data type) and happens on your device.
- This sleep data is not transmitted off the device by this app.
- You can grant or revoke this permission at any time in Health Connect or in Android Settings. The app works without it.
3. Information you enter in the app
Content you create — your profile details, dream-journal entries, and app settings — is stored locally on your device in an encrypted database (SQLCipher). Sensitive values such as your app password are stored using Android's encrypted storage. None of this is sent to us or to any third party.
4. Notifications, Bluetooth, and Do Not Disturb
- Notifications are used to show an ongoing notice while a dream or sleep sound is playing in the background.
- Bluetooth permission is used only to detect your connected headphones so playback can pause if they disconnect.
- Do Not Disturb access, if you allow it, is used only to silence interruptions during a dream session. These are device functions; no data is collected from them.
What we do NOT do
- We do not collect, store, or share your personal data on our servers — the app has no servers and no internet permission.
- We do not use analytics, advertising, or third-party tracking SDKs.
- We do not record or upload your microphone audio.
- We do not sell or share your data with anyone.
Exporting and sharing your data (you are in control)
The app lets you export your dream/sleep journal as a CSV file and share it using Android's share sheet. If you do this, the data goes to whichever app or destination you choose (for example email or cloud storage). That sharing is initiated and controlled entirely by you and is governed by the privacy policy of the app you share it to. We are not involved in or aware of that transfer.
Data retention and deletion
Your data stays on your device until you delete it. You can remove it by deleting your entries in the app, clearing the app's storage in Android Settings, or uninstalling the app. Uninstalling removes the app's local database from your device.
Security
App data is held in an encrypted on-device database, and sensitive values use Android's encrypted preferences. Because nothing is transmitted off the device, your information is not exposed to network interception by this app. No method of electronic storage is 100% secure, but the app is built to keep your data local and encrypted.
Children's privacy
The app is not directed to children under 13, and it does not knowingly collect personal information from children. Because the app holds everything on your own device and transmits nothing, no child's information reaches us in any case.
